Research and AI

Human Consciousness and Artificial Intelligence

A research line on the relationship between human experience and intelligent systems. The starting point is to understand which forms of memory, attention and judgement are supported, transformed or delegated when we work with artificial intelligence.

Memory and continuity

Human memory connects events, states, intentions and consequences. In comparison with artificial systems, the question concerns how information is selected, retained, updated and made available for decisions. The continuity of a digital archive is not equivalent to the continuity of lived experience.

Consciousness and metacognition

The research distinguishes subjective experience from a system’s functional capacities: monitoring a response, expressing uncertainty, recognising an error and revising a choice. Describing these capacities does not demonstrate the presence of consciousness. Human metacognition provides questions and criteria for comparison; any extension of the term to AI requires an explicit operational definition.

Bias, automatic patterns and cognitive delegation

What assumptions guide a response? When does the user stop checking? How can interfaces, incentives and habits reinforce automatic agreement? Attention is directed both to the limitations of systems and to the human conditions of their use: context, skills, available time and the ability to raise objections.

Responsibility

A useful system must make its limitations, sources, uncertainties and relevant decision steps recognisable. Responsibility also requires identifiable people and organisations, opportunities for correction and criteria for deciding when an assessment must return to human judgement.

Development matrices for intelligent systems

This expression denotes a working hypothesis: organising memory of context, recognition of limits, review of errors, comparison of perspectives and assessment of consequences into an explicit framework for design and observation. It is a conceptual proposal to be refined through use cases, assessment criteria and interdisciplinary dialogue. This page does not announce a validated model, a conscious system or experimental results.

Method and status of the work

This research line is exploratory. Philosophical interpretations, design hypotheses and empirical findings must remain distinguishable. Any studies, prototypes or collaborations will be documented with their objectives, method, limitations and actual stage of development.

This framework connects with Research, Il Principio della Memoria and Zombificazione digitale.

Research dialogue

This exploratory research line examines memory, consciousness, metacognition, bias, cognitive delegation and responsibility in human–AI interaction. Development matrices are proposed as a conceptual framework for context retention, uncertainty, error review and evaluation of consequences. Functional self-monitoring is not presented as evidence of subjective experience. Empirical claims, philosophical interpretations and design hypotheses remain distinct.
